Hey, Maw! I'm Onna TV!

If you watch any sports on TV in Phoenix, it's only a matter of time before you see the ad for the hand surgeon who specializes in carpal tunnel. For absolutely no reason, the commercial ends with a shot of his entire family dressed like they just got out of church or are on their way to Olan Mills, and his littlest daughter snuggles up to him and says, "Daddy's baby girl!"

I was trying to explain to my friends how often this happens in the world of local TV ads. You go out to shoot a commercial for some car dealer or furniture store and when you arrive, they have their cousins and neighbors and high school friends all there wanting "ta be onna TV box!" In Panama City, we had a guy who wrapped his dog up in a blanket and held it like a newborn baby while he talked about his mattress store, but no commercial was more blatant about shoving in family just to get them on TV than Jeff Richards when I was in Yuma.

I've been going through some old video tapes and hope to find more gems like this.
